Just looking for any tips or ideas for cleaning the rust off of my old shotgun. It's pretty thick in some spots. Unfortunately it sat unprotected in a garage for some years before I acquired it. Just looking for tips, products, or ideas. Thank you.

I have redone a few guns I would start with taking the gun apart using steel wool to remove the rust/blueing then re blueing the barrel with a kit from gander I would stay away from the cold blue stuff "Birchwood Casey" makes I never had much luck you can do the hot blue over a stove with a range hood... It just depends on what you are looking to do sometimes redoing guns takes away from the value. Hope this helps. You can get most of this stuff at gander and some of it at walmart...

Thanks for tips. gun turned out great, ended up going with 1000 and 1200 grit wet/dry sand paper on the rough spots on the barrel, followed up with a fine steel wool. I used the Birchwood Casey Super Blue, and it really did the trick. It's faster and seems to get a deeper blue than the Hoppes 9 re-blue kit that i have used in the past. thanks again! Kyle
